There is always a reason to visit the magical Florence, but there are much more reasons to come to Tuscany in fall season 2015.
If you adore immersing yourself in a walking through the alleys of the city center, between the lights of the windows and the smell of roasted chestnuts, then the autumn atmosphere of Tuscany is for you.
Of course, there is the general idea that autumn is something gloomy and unhappy, like a season of “sunset”. The leaves fall from the trees and you will probably feel a little bit of sadness, but autumn has also others facets! Leave at home the common stereotypical ideas, and turn your attitude into something positive: in Tuscany you can enjoy spa’s vapors, deserted beaches for a relaxing walk, as well as exhibitions, concerts, shows and events for a very special holiday. You should definitely not miss five special fall activities, especially in places around the city of Florence. Tuscan’s gorgeous landscapes and small towns are a perfect destination for a short weekend getaway.
Special tip: I would recommend you to start your day tasting a typical Tuscan cake in a coffee shop, even if it is an italian cliché (I can assure that it is so gooood).
1. A journey of taste in Mugello
Why do I mention this place? Because in autumn it becomes a feast of flavors, certainly not to ignore.
I could say that typical gourmet food tempt me a lot! From “tortelli”, to chestnuts, until the truffle or the “polenta”, you can find dishes for all tastes.
Mugello in fall season is full of initiatives to be undertaken: festivals of all kinds, especially in the month of October, every weekend offers different opportunities to sample typical delights of the area and of the autumnal period.
On 18th and 25th October don’t forget the festival of “Marrone” – a typical and fine kind of chestnut born in the Florence countryside – and the underwood fruits, located in Palazzuolo sul Senio. During the festival you can enjoy exhibitions of products as mushrooms, truffles, homemade jams, herbs liqueurs and forest fruits, but you could also taste sweet chestnuts.
Can’t you give up tasting around pastries and desserts? If your answer is a definite “No!” I cannot help suggesting you a greedy appointment in the historical center of Borgo San Lorenzo: Cioccolandia!
The event dedicated to a high quality craft product, managed by masters chocolatiers with exhibition stands and special tastings, could cost you an extra kilo more!
Save the date: 7th and 8th November.
Special Tip: How to get to Mugello area?
You can simply get a shuttle to the Central Station of Florence, called “Santa Maria Novella”. There you find trains to Borgo San Lorenzo (Mugello); otherwise, you can get a bus just opposite to the train station.
2. Chianti and..
Are you a wine connoisseur? Then you will be interested in the unique process of Chianti wine production.
You can attend to the traditional process but also at the olive oil production in an old noble Villa in Tuscan countryside.
But before, tourist’s organizations offers nice horseback riding tour around the Chianti countryside. If you choose this path, you will have the opportunity to explore the true beauty of Tuscan landscapes in the most natural way.
How will the day develop?
- You will comfortably be shuttled to the Chianti region, known worldwide for its famous wines (an experience not to miss!).
- Of course, you will follow a brief lesson to get acquainted with your horse, for enjoy the best of your horseback ride in a very picturesque setting.
- You will be thrown into a scenic landscape, made of the typical Tuscan hillside, vineyards and olive groves.
- Then, you will attend to the typical wine production.
- At the end, you will satisfy your hunger with a local lunch (or dinner) and you will be accompanied to Florence.
3. Relax, take it easy!
The sky is widely overcast, the temperature falls down, and you definitely want to escape from the autumnal torpor, before becoming a sloth.
Sometimes you rightly need a recharge from stress and everyday routine, so what could be better than watching the Tuscan autumn wrapped into thermal vapors? It will be very suggestive.
Here there is a special selection of the best spas in Tuscany. The atmosphere help you to feel more active later, giving vitality and harmony to your body.
It worth to appoint the thermal baths of Chianciano; that’s a true sensorial SPA far from Florence, where a walk on river pebbles, emotional showers, scented oils, lights and indoor and outdoor whirlpools are awaiting you.
You can choose among four sensorial pathways: relaxing, purifying, energizing or rebalancing, the whole in a magical and almost surreal atmosphere.
#TouriPills: Don’t miss a dip in the salt water pool, or in the pool with underwater music for a super relaxation!
It is impossible not to mention Montecatini caves. These were called “the eighth wonder of the world”, so you have to see them once in a lifetime! It is a truly natural cave, which holds stalactites and stalagmites, and its thermal water seems to be a see-through mirror…I would say: Just perfect!
Another memorable SPA I recommend is “Terme di San Giovanni”, built in a glass and wood octagon, where the water flows from a natural waterfall. Impressive.
4. Artisan for one day
If you like immersing yourself in typical activities of the place lost during the years, you will be able to attend several lessons in and around Florence!
To learn something practical, you have certainly come to the right place.
I would mention especially for you a short course of leather working, in a typical laboratory called “Scuola del cuoio”. This can be surely an interesting opportunity to make the ancient Italian culture more familiar. Depends on what kind of lesson you choose, you will generally attend to a short lesson on the materials used to create leather products. Then all the participants will practically learn to cut, prepare and finish leather items, thanks to the help of a prepared teacher. Very interesting.
Otherwise, I would recommend some painting workshops organized for tourists. I think it is a beautiful experience because you can have the possibility to attend to an art lesson – learning to paint on canvas – directly into a private art studio. Are you ready to become a vintage painter?
5. A jump into the past
Autumn probably is the best moment to take advantage of a beautiful outdoor day. The sun still warms and the climate is not too much cold yet.
It can be nice to mix your sunny good mood with historic experiences!
The archaeological activity in Montelupo take you to an ancient territory where is high the attention to the tradition, and where special packages, which combines ceramic workshops and laboratories about their typical products, are frequently.
I am not very much a tour’s fan, but the guided walking tour among the Montelupo Fiorentino’s places of excavation is unique, and I have to tell you that it really differs from others.
Expert archaeologists lead the walking tour and you can enjoy a refreshment break along the wayJ. A visit to the Archaeological Museum of Montelupo complete the course.
If not or if you are a first-timer, when you are travelling try to pretend that you are local. Which café would be your favorite one? What would be your favorite activity around the city? In which supermarket would you go shopping? I think that only in this way you can feel the local essence. Enjoy the season!
